BIO

Rebecca Flaherty is a classically trained soprano with degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Georgia Southern University. She has been a student of the bel canto technique since 1994, and has been teaching since 2000.

Recent appearances: Music with a Mission Concert Series, Savannah Music Festival, Onstage at The Lucas Cabaret Series, Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, The Savannah Philharmonic, Charleston Chamber Opera, Savannah Voice Festival, and First Coast Opera.

Rebecca created a partnership with other like-minded voice instructors in 2012 to form The Voice Co-op.  This innovative community gives voice students monthly group classes with the opportunity to sing and gain feedback from skilled voice professionals and an audience of student peers.  In this way, all students are nurtured by many teachers, and gain valuable performance experience vital to their artistic development.

The continuation of the vocal arts is a passion of Rebecca's.  To bring more of the Classical vocal arts to the local community, she initiated a relationship between Sherrill Milnes’s VOICExperience Foundation and the city of Savannah to develop The Savannah Voice Festival, which debuted in August 2013.

In the spring of 2015, Rebecca was invited by the Savannah Music Festival to be a teaching artist with Musical Explorers, a music education program which was developed in partnership with Carnegie Hall. Ten thousand children from Savannah and the surrounding region learned about expressive singing as Rebecca rendered fun performances of arias by Mozart and Puccini.

She volunteers for Savannah Friends of Music, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit that has been awarding grants to local Classical music organizations and scholarships to music students since 2003.

Early in 2016, Savannah Children's Choir named Rebecca Interim Director of both the Discovery Choir (K-2) and the Premier Choir (SCC's touring group).  She conducted them on their tour of Ireland in June 2016.

Rebecca earned her Kodàly I certification at Westminster Choir College. Through her new business, Do-Re-We,  Rebecca teaches music and movement classes for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers.
